When people say Versailles, they think of the Palace. But a kilometre away lies a place we love even more: Marie-Antoinette's estate. More intimate, more moving, less crowded. Here's how to visit.
How to get there
On foot from the Palace (about 20 minutes) or bike from the Swiss Water feature. Our favourite: cycling.
Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon, Hamlet
Start with Grand Trianon: pink and white columns. Petit Trianon was Marie-Antoinette's refuge. The Queen's Theatre when open is a gem. English gardens: grottoes, Temple of Love, stream. The Hamlet: farm, mill, animals—moving.
Time and tip
Three to four hours to see everything without rushing. Don't pair it with the Palace on the same day. The estate closes earlier—check hours. Our favourite moment: late summer afternoon, low light on the Hamlet.
